What to do with bouldering gear you've outgrown (or barely used).
Last updated
Bouldering is one of the easiest hobbies to start and one of the easiest to drift away from. You go a few times with a friend, buy the shoes because the rental pair felt like cardboard, maybe grab a chalk bag and a brush — and then life does its thing, and six months later there's a pair of barely-broken-in climbing shoes curled up at the back of a cupboard.
They're too specific to donate usefully, too fiddly to be worth selling for what they'd fetch, and too good to bin. So they stay. Sound familiar? (This is the cupboard problem in full.)
Here's the better ending for them.
Your "wasted" shoes are someone's perfect first pair
The single most intimidating purchase in bouldering is the first one. New climbers agonise over sizing, downturn, brand — and really don't want to spend £80–£120 to discover the sport isn't for them. Your lightly-used shoes solve that exactly: broken in, forgiving, and free of the "what if I hate it" risk that keeps beginners renting.
The same goes for a chalk bag, a brush, or a crash pad gathering dust from an outdoor phase you've paused. To you it's clutter with a guilt tax. To the next person it's the difference between trying and not bothering.
How to move it on (without the selling faff)
You don't list it and wait. On Adopt A Hobby you say what you want next — and the gear you're clearing becomes what you bring to the swap. We're new, so be ready to be early: you might be the first climber here, and that's fine, because this runs on posting, not browsing.
- Clearing out? Post a wanted for whatever you're curious about now — the clear-out funds the next thing. Mention the bouldering gear you're moving on; it's what makes your side of a swap attractive.
- Just starting? Post a wanted for "beginner bouldering shoes, around size X" (chalk bag optional). No need to own anything to ask. We match you when someone clears theirs.
Either way it's the same minute-long move: Ask → Get offers → Swap.
Those four-times-worn shoes don't have to be a small regret. Post what you're after and let them start someone's first session.
nothing to trade required · no account needed to start · takes about a minute.
