What to do with an old badminton racket.
Last updated
It's a small object with a surprising amount of guilt attached: the badminton racket from the club you were definitely going to stick with. You went twice. It was fun. Then life happened, and the racket has been leaning in a cupboard ever since, a little monument to a Tuesday you meant to keep.
You've got three obvious options, and two of them feel bad. Here's a third.
Why selling it rarely feels worth it
A used beginner racket sells for about the price of a coffee — and getting even that costs you more than it's worth:
- The faff. Photos, a description, a price, reposting when nobody bites.
- The messages. "Is this still available?" then silence. "Will you take less?" "Can you post it?"
- The payoff. A fiver, a stranger, and a dead end. The racket's gone and nothing started.
Binning it is worse — it's a perfectly good racket. And keeping it just lets it keep charging rent in the cupboard. (The cupboard, in full.)
The kinder move: let it start someone else's Tuesday
Here's the thing about a beginner racket you've outgrown — it's exactly what someone nervous to start is looking for. Right now there's a person wondering whether the local club is their thing, who'd love a racket to find out without buying new. (That's literally the guide we point them to.)
So instead of converting your racket to a fiver, convert it to your next curiosity — and hand the racket to someone genuinely glad to get it.
That's what Adopt A Hobby is for — and we'll be honest that we're new: there's no catalogue to browse yet. You don't list and wait. You post what you're after next, and offer the racket as your side of the swap. We match it to the person who asked for exactly this.
- Clearing out? Post a wanted for whatever you're curious about now; the racket is your trade.
- Just want it gone to a good home? Post it as the thing you're offering and say what you'd like back.
Either way: Ask → Get offers → Swap.
A racket sold is a fiver and a dead end. A racket passed on is someone's first game. Post what you're after and let the old gear go start something.
nothing to trade required · no account needed to start · takes about a minute.
