How to get into bouldering on a budget.
Last updated
Bouldering is one of the purest hobbies going: no ropes, no harness, just you, a wall, and a problem to figure out. The barrier isn't the climbing. It's the little pile of kit everyone tells you to buy before you've even found out whether you like being four feet off the ground.
The honest beginner question is simple — do I enjoy this enough to keep coming back? — and you do not need new gear to answer it.
The "beginner kit" is cheaper than the internet makes it sound
Here's the good news the gear guides bury: the stuff a new boulderer actually needs is minimal, and almost all of it already exists, barely used, in other people's cupboards.
- Shoes. The one thing worth having that fits you. And beginner climbing shoes are the single most-abandoned piece of gear in the sport — bought keen, worn four times, outgrown when someone upgrades. (That exact cupboard, from the other side.)
- Chalk and a bag. Nice to have, easy to borrow, cheap to pass on.
- Everything else. A gym does the rest. You don't own a wall.
So the cost of trying bouldering isn't the headline number. It's one pair of shoes — ideally a pair someone's already moved on from.
Ask for the starter pair — don't shop for the perfect one
The cheapest honest way in is to get an outgrown beginner pair onto your feet and go climb. If you love it, you'll know exactly what to buy next. If you don't, you've spent almost nothing and can pass them straight on.
That's what Adopt A Hobby is for — and we'll be straight with you that we're new: you may be the first person asking for shoes here. That's fine, because you don't browse for them, you ask — and we match you when a pair is cleared out.
- Starting out? Post a wanted for "beginner bouldering shoes, around size X." You don't need to own anything to ask.
- Got old shoes yourself? Post a wanted for your next curiosity and offer the shoes as your side of the swap.
The whole thing is a minute: Ask → Get offers → Swap.
Don't buy a kit to find out if you like bouldering. Borrow the hobby first. Post the beginner gear you're after and go pull on some plastic.
nothing to trade required · no account needed to start · takes about a minute.
